Dr. John M. MacLeod, 27, of New York, was sentenced on Sept. 27, 2003, in federal court in Manhattan. Judge Daniel V. Schaffer, who will hear the case, was named in a United States District Court case against him as well as others.
A U. S. District Court jury convicted M. G. Sildenafil, a drug designer, for selling the drugs, including Viagra. It was the first time in history that a counterfeit drug had been sold on the Internet in more than 30 years.
The counterfeit drug market began as early as the late 1990s and quickly grew into a global health crisis. A study of the Internet has found counterfeit pills to be worth $2 billion in annual sales. Pfizer's patent on Viagra allows the company to sell Viagra and other drugs without a prescription.
The defendant was sentenced in 2003 to 10 years in prison, for selling the drug and for the sale of the drug to consumers. Judge Schaffer said that the case should be transferred to a federal court.
